The first thing to adjust for your spinal health is your diet and exercise regimen. Extra weight puts unnecessary strain on your spine. A good strategy is to stay within 10 pounds of your ideal weight. Extra weight, like a “beer belly,” weaken the tendons, muscles, and ligaments. Eating healthy and working out regularly is key.
Follow the necessary precautions when bending and lifting. Never bend at the waist to pick something up from the ground. Instead, kneel with one foot flat on the floor. You can also bend at the knees. Keep the item close to you, lifting with your legs instead of your back. Avoid twisting while lifting. This is especially detrimental to your spine.
If you stand for long periods, here are a few tips for you. Stand with one foot in front, with your knees slightly bent. This removes pressure from your lower back. Abstain from standing bent at the waist for long periods too.
Even your sleeping position affects your spine. When you sleep on your back, you take on large amounts of pressure. Try sleeping in a different position. If you continue to sleep on your back, place a pillow under your knees as this removes some of the pressure. Also consider sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees.
