Preventing Back Pain While Traveling

Anytime you stay in the same position for a long while, you increase your risk of developing back pain. But when you’re sitting in a vehicle, it can be hard to find opportunities to move around. We at Natural Care Chiropractic in Lindenhurst understand that it can be challenging for our patients to maintain good postural practices while traveling, so we wanted to provide some tips on staying as comfortable as possible. Both doctors are well traveled and are able to give tried and proven advice.
We generally recommend that people who sit in front of computers all day move around every half hour. Few people want to do this while they’re driving and have somewhere to be, but they should at least take breaks every ninety minutes. They should also alternate their hands’ position on the steering wheel every fifteen minutes so their shoulders don’t become stiff. It is also a good idea for the driver to scoot their chair forward so they don’t have to stretch their lower back to reach the steering wheel, and for the passengers to keep their feet flat on the floor. Some easy ways to remove stress on your spine while seated are to use neck pillows and cylindrical pillows in the curve of your lower back. Don’t sit on objects in your back pockets, or else any discomfort you feel at first will become worse over time. We also advise people using mobile devices to remember to keep their heads up and the screen at eye-level.
